A new yacht, a planned upgrade or conflicting advice: together, we bring structure to your technical questions. What do you really need? What suits your boat? And what can wait?

How do I plan an electrical refit?

Start with your boat, cruising plans and existing installation. Identify loads, upgrades and current problems. We prioritise power, distribution, monitoring and documentation before choosing components. The planning scope and deliverables are agreed for your project.

Must I replace all the wiring?

Not necessarily. Condition, sizing and layout determine what can remain. Photos and diagrams provide an initial view; concealed wiring and safety-critical features may require onboard checks. New equipment should fit the existing installation.

Can I switch to lithium batteries?

Lithium conversion concerns the whole system: battery management, charging sources, loads, protection and manufacturer requirements. We review equipment and settings first. Simply replacing the battery is not automatically a suitable solution.

How do alternator, solar and chargers work together?

Each source must suit the battery and have appropriate control or shutdown. Charging profiles, currents and behaviour when the battery management system disconnects matter. We consider motoring, anchoring, shore power and generator use using the equipment documentation.

How much solar do I need?

Daily consumption comes first, then cruising area, season, installation space, shading and other charging sources. Rated panel output is not continuous real-world output. An energy balance helps estimate solar contribution and reserves for low-yield days.

Which solar controller suits my system?

Module wiring, electrical specifications, controller input limits, charging power and manufacturer requirements all matter. Panel orientation and shading also affect whether to use one or several MPPT controllers. Panel wattage alone is insufficient.

Can I add a watermaker and washing machine?

We review the specific equipment, daily energy use, simultaneous loads and starting or heating demand. Then batteries, inverter, charging, wiring and protection, plus space, access and plumbing. Responsibilities for electrical work and other trades are clarified first.

Can large appliances run simultaneously?

This depends on equipment data and your supply. Daily energy and simultaneous power are different. A large battery does not increase an undersized inverter's output. We consider both system sizing and practical scheduling to reduce peaks.

How can I improve energy management?

First establish what consumes energy, what charges the batteries and what reserves remain. This informs charging times and use of large loads. Measurements test assumptions and reveal differences. The goal is an understandable system that is practical to operate underway.

Do I need a generator for long-distance cruising?

It depends on consumption, charging sources and comfort requirements. We examine typical days at anchor, sailing and in port, including periods of low solar yield. Maintenance, space and operation are part of deciding whether a generator or other changes make sense.

How can different components be networked?

A cable does not guarantee compatibility. Protocols, exact models, software and required functions matter. Displaying data, controlling equipment and safety functions are distinct. We identify the information exchanged and verify that the relevant interfaces are supported.

What matters with digital switching?

Consider fault behaviour as well as convenience: what remains available if a display or network fails, and what manual operation exists? Labelling, documentation and maintenance matter. Configuration changes must suit the system; specialist requirements are clarified beforehand.

Why does voltage drop at my loads?

Supply condition, connections and cable sizing are possible causes. We examine when it happens and which loads run together. Existing measurements and plans help; reliable diagnosis may require measurements by a qualified person on board. Guesswork replacements are rarely helpful.

How do I integrate Starlink?

We consider the exact device, power supply, mounting and onboard network, plus operating hours and energy use. Use at sea also depends on the provider's current plans, approvals and terms, which must be checked for your area and intended use.

Can I combine Starlink, mobile data and marina Wi-Fi?

A suitable network can use several connections. Switching and priorities depend on the router's capabilities. We establish your needs before selecting equipment and consider reception, data allowances, costs and power. Continuous connectivity cannot be guaranteed.

What equipment do I need for ocean cruising?

Your boat, route, crew and needs determine the equipment. We consider power, navigation, communication and failure management, with understandable documentation, spares and maintenance. More equipment does not automatically mean more reliability; knowing your system and its limits matters.

Can you help select equipment and contractors?

I help define requirements and evaluate components in your boat's context. We examine quote scope, interfaces and unresolved points. I can support the search for suitable contractors and technical coordination. Availability, tasks and responsibilities are agreed for each project.

Do you also carry out installations?

Advice, planning and technical support are my focus. Installation work may be agreed additionally. We first clarify scope, location and other trades needed, so you know what I take on and what requires separate arrangements.

How does worldwide remote help work?

Start with your concern and an overview of the installation. Photos, labels, plans and existing measurements help identify connections and next steps. Remote help supports advice and diagnosis but cannot replace a necessary local inspection or qualified onboard work.

What information do you need?

Boat type, year, cruising area, your goal and an equipment list help, along with photos, diagrams, model details and upgrade documents. Incomplete documentation does not prevent an initial conversation. We identify what is missing for further planning together.

What do I receive after planning?

We agree this before starting. You should understand the technical assessment, priorities and next steps. Whether component lists, detailed documentation or wiring diagrams are included is explicitly agreed, keeping scope and results transparent.

What does advice cost?

The introductory conversation is free. Afterwards, you receive an individual quote for the agreed scope. Work depends on documentation, system complexity and support needed. Onboard appointments and travel costs are agreed before commissioning.

Can you support my refit without installing it yourself?

Yes. Advice, planning and technical support are the focus. I help clarify requirements, assess quotes and coordinate the work with your yard and specialist contractors.

What can be assessed remotely?

Photos, videos, equipment details, wiring diagrams and quotes allow an initial assessment and targeted questions. We are clear about what cannot be reliably judged this way and whether an onboard inspection is needed.

How do we start planning my upgrade?

In the free introductory call, we discuss your boat, how you use it and your goals. You then receive a quote setting out the planning scope and agreed deliverables.
